Having an interdisciplinary care team assures every expectant mother that each professional who sees them provide consistent care in a unified manner.

What is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist?

This specialist, known as a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist or Perinatologists, has advanced knowledge to care for expectant mothers whose pregnancy falls into a high-risk category. The mother's general OB/GYN doctor makes a referral for the mother to this specialist who has had three more years of advanced education in the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

This MFM Doctor may choose to provide the mother with most of their prenatal care and may consult with their primary care doctor, midwife, or general OB/GYN doctor as needed. This doctor may also opt to work with the mother's available OB/GYN doctor, their midwife, primary care physician, neonatologist, or pediatric professionals to ensure they get the highest healthcare available for them and their baby. The goal of all our professionals working together is a safe pregnancy, labor, and delivery for all expectant mothers.

The focus of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist is to keep the mother and fetus healthy at all times. Sometimes, depending on the mother's circumstances, this specialist may call together an intensive care team. The following reasons are why a woman seeks the services of this skilled professional.

  • If the mother has chronic health conditions involving the heart, lungs, kidneys, digestive system, blood vessels, immune system disorders, seizure history, blood clotting disorders, HIV, Cytomegalovirus, or Parvovirus, to mention a few

  • If the mother has had multiple miscarriages, early labors, early deliveries

  • If there are known genetic abnormalities

  • When there are suspected birth defects

  • If there are suspected growth restrictions

  • Caring for and checking the health of multiple births

  • May be able to correct fetal health issues before birth

  • Mothers who are seriously injured before giving birth

  • Mothers who have gestational diabetes or chronic diabetes

  • If the mother has a history for high blood pressure
